mumbled "Self-Harm: What It Is and Why It's a Shitty Thing to Do"

WARNING: THIS POST WILL CONTAIN IMAGES OF SELF-HARM SCARS AND DISGUSTING ROMANTICIZING OF THE TOPIC

I'm just going to assume that everyone here knows what self-harm is, considering it seems to be a very popular topic on sights like this. But in case you didn't, it's pretty self-explanatory. Cutting, burning, etc yourself.

A question you may have is, why do people do it, and why is it a persisting problem? To be honest, for a long time I had the same question myself. Here are some reasons I've seen (none of which are good reasons at all to cause bodily harm) :
    - Feeling alone
    - Feeling dead inside
    - Feeling less than wonderful
    - And the big bad D word; depression

Well, here is why self-harm is not a good way to get your feelings out in the open:
    - Blood not good. Blood bad.
    - Those cuts and burns are a reminder of your condition and will be there forever.
    - People who self-harm are more likely to relapse because of this reminder.
    - I did it once, wrote HELP on my arm, and it got infected and I had to be hospitalized.
    - It's really really REALLY hard to stop.
    - It will NOT be easy to explain it to your future children.

There are hotlines and people to talk to. I don't give a shit how nerve-wracking it is. Self-harm is a shitty thing to do and shouldn't even be a last resort. Here are some numbers I've found you can call to get someone to talk to:

    - The Samaritans 24-Hour Crisis Hotline (USA) : 1 (212) 673-3000
    - Crisis Call Center (USA) : 1-800-273-8255 or text ANSWER to 839863
    - The Samaritans UK Office (UK ) : 08457 90 90 90

Now, the act in itself is not as big a problem as the fact that our society is romanticizing it, as in, making it look like a healthy and fabulous thing to do. Examples:

NO. STOP IT. THIS IS NOT OKAY. SELF HARM IS NOT AN OKAY THING TO DO, IT IS NOT PRETTY. STOP ROMANTICIZING IT, YOU'RE MAKING THE PROBLEM WORSE. PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE THE REASON I GOT A WRIST INFECTION FROM CARVING INTO MYSELF AT THIRTEEN.

But the bright side is, people are noticing the romanticizing and trying to stop it:

Thank you for listening, and remember that I love you guys and you can talk to me anytime. If you don't want to talk to me where others can see it you can also reach me by Kik (teamchaosprez) and Tumblr (also teamchaosprez).

I love you guys so much, please stay strong. xo

Exactly. People who do that are just depressed or feel that they don't belong. I think I know some people who cut them selves

People are turning self-harming into to some sort of trend, it is disgusting, self harm is addiction and damages you mentally and physically.
