Black Friday: A Writing Competition

Black Friday is coming ...

What does black mean to you?

It's a day that we have come to associate with lots and lots of shopping, the frezy of spending and saving that one can expect on a holiday-worthy occasion during which many of us get some much needed time off :) Historically, "Black Friday" is an ominous term during which some calamity befell unfortunate characters in a bad situation not too long ago.

These days the term has taken on a more light-hearted meaning, where in reality the day and days surrounding the start of this holiday shopping season often results in a slew of injuries, violence, and even death - so while it's a time to be joyful and in anticipation of the good times to come with family and friends - it is also a time to be cautious and cognizant of the darkness that's coming earlier and lasting longer than ever before.

So, despite the flurry of activity near and around this day in November, the coming dark and cold that this season brings leaves many of us contemplating just how deep and dark Black Friday can be; this time around use those feelings to fuel your own shadowed stories.

How to Participate

We want to challenge you to write a movella centered on the theme of darkness. We realize this is abstract concept too, but depending on how creative you are, this "darkness" could be the moral, the enviornment, or a personified character itself.

Keep in mind that your entry can be a short story, poem, fanfic - you decideAnd it is not limited to writing alone, you are allowed to create a cover or fanart too, just as long as we can recognize the "darkness" theme somehow through your design.

Winning entries will be shared on Movellas' social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)

The Best Story will receive a hardcover copy of White Rose, Black Forest by Eoin Dempsey, or a $20 Amazon gift card.

Runner Up will receive a copy of Black Friday from the Valens Legacy (Volume 1) by Jan Stryvant, or a $15 Amazon gift card!

Best Cover/Fanart/Trailer will receive a copy of Black Friday by New York Times Best-selling Author Nick Russell, or a $15 gift card.

The darkness isn't coming, it's already here. Ahead of this shopping spree weekend, we want you all to ruminate on what the black in Black Friday means to you, and bring it to light in this competition...
