Awake All Night

A story I thought up while trying to sleep.

2. I Count The Stars Within Your Eyes

My alarm awoke me the next morning at 5:30am whilst it was still dark outside. The sun hadn't yet crept upon the horizon, and the birds, wind and the house were still all fast asleep. I quickly swung back the covers and climbed out of bed, rubbing my eyes as I head towards the wardrobe. As I changed into a pair of floral board shorts and baggy, white tank top, memories last night flooded back. I smiled. The one girl I had never thought I'd see again, had been at the party and she'd been looking right back at me. My smile quickly turned to a grin as I remembered how shocked and embarrassed she had looked when I had turned to see her looking. I walked down the stairs and out the back door, closing it quietly behind me and head into the backyard ready to wax my favourite of many surfboards that were still lying on the grass from yesterday afternoon. I took a deep breathe of the fresh air and sighed happily as I began waxing my board. "Cody?" I heard my mum's voice say. I spun my head to face her and smiled as she stood in the doorway, leaning against the door frame with a smile on her face. "How long have you been out here?" She asked, tightening her robe around her body.

"Not long." I told her, yawning a little before running a hand through my hair. Mum smiled.

"Do you want anything?" She asked. I shook my head.

"No thanks. I've gotta go in a minute and meet the boys." I told her, a grin spreading across my face just at the thought of finally being back out on the ocean with my friends. She smiled and nodded.

"Okay, love. But don't forget I want to see you this summer as well." She reminded. I shot her a smile and nodded.

"We'll spend some time together soon, I promise." I told her truthfully. Mum smiled and then head back inside the house and into the kitchen and I got back to my board. Once I'd finished, I made my way to the ocean just down the street, my surfboard in hand and my skateboard rolling across the concrete underneath my bare feet. Just as I reached the beach, I kicked up my wheels and smiled as my toes hit the silky sand. The sky was slightly brighter now as the sun was beginning to rise and the sky was full of pink and blue colours

"Hey guys!" I called out as I saw four of my best friends sitting on the sand beside their boards, awaiting my arrival. They all turned and grinned as I reached them and greeted each other happily before hitting the water. After a while, dawn turned into midday and we finally decided to take a break. We all head back out of the deep blue water and onto the white, soft sand. I put my board down and sat down next to it, pulling my knee's up a little and resting my elbows on them as I looked out to the ocean.

"Aye, Cody, do you want a drink?" Jake asked, running a hand through his wet, salty hair. I nodded and stood up, heading off to the drink stands, Jake by my side. "So, how'd you like the party last night?" He asked. I shrugged, rubbing the back of my neck as the sun heated my skin.

"It was alright, I guess." I told him. He laughed.

"Just alright?" He questioned. I chuckled and nodded. "It has to have been better than 'alright', I saw you checking out the girl on the log next to us." Jake told me with a wink. An immediate smile spread across my face just at the thought of her. Jake chuckled as we reached the drinks stand and began to line up. "Why didn't you go speak to her?" He asked. I opened my mouth to answer but no words came out. I suppose I didn't know why I hadn't gone to talk to her. I was nervous but I should have said something. Jake raised his eyebrows as I saw nothing and my brain ached for something to say.

"Jake!" A girl's voice said. Our head's snapped to our left and both smiled warmly as we caught sight of Perry, the girl from last night. Jake grinned.

"Hey." He greeted, pulling her into a hug before pulling away. She joined us in the line and gave me a welcoming smile, I gave her a friendly nod. "How are you?" He asked her and she smiled.

"I'm good thanks." She answered. "I'm down here to meet my friend." She continued, glancing around. Suddenly a smile quickly spread across and myself and Jake exchanged confused glances as she began waving rapidly, looking over m shoulder. "Ava!" She shouted. Our confused looks faded as we turned around and for the second time since I'd been home, my eyes widened as I looked at the girl skating towards us, a smile on her face as she caught sight of her Perry. It was her.
