Say Goodbye

Give up: (v) to surrender; to give oneself to a particular feeling.
To abandon.

1. He will not cry

He Will Not Cry.

The thing about breakups is there is always a casualty, someone always ends up feeling completely dead inside, while the other carries about. Sometimes it'll take the couple by storm, surprising them both, and sometimes you can see it coming and the best you can do is sit and wait. Love is just so unpredictable like that.

He did not understand why she wanted, correction-needed- to speak to him right away, nor did he comprehend the sad dazed look she gave him. He only saw what he wanted, her green eyes looking up at his, the white of her teeth as she bit her bottom lip nervously.

He ignored the fact that she figeted with her hands, rubbing them and twisting them, and choose not to acknowledge the fact that she kept glancing over her shoulder.

He should have known better.

Say something I'm giving up on you...

"We have to talk" she had whispered softly, she looked so fragile like any small touch and she might shatter into a million pieces.

He knew from the moment those 4 words left her lips that his life would never be the same. And as the tears welled in her eyes all he could do is pray that it was a dream, that soon he'd wake up and forget this thought had ever crossed his mind.

"I-I've been thinking..." She trailed on.

He silently begged her to think again, with his eyes he pleaded her to reconsider. She was his world... He would travel to the ends of the earth for her.

I'll be the one if you want me to...

"Ummm" she murmured not meeting his eyes, but instead choosing to stare at the floor tiles.

"I-I've been thinking, I think we need to take a break" she stammered. He nodded slowly letting her words sink in, he had opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out and they just wallowed in silence. He shook his head, black hair falling into his watery eyes, he had been so sure she was the one.

Any where I would have followed you. Say something I'm giving up on you.

But now as he stood there staring down at the girl he thought he knew, he could see he had never truly known her.    She closed her eyes, silent tears cascading down her cheeks.   He tried to speak again but his lips failed him.

And I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all

How? Why? Where the only thoughts that had been running through his head. She pulled him out of his thoughts by placing a gentle hand on his cheek, a small act he had grown accustomed to. He had to fight and resist the urge to lean into her embrace.

And I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

She had held his gaze for a long time before sobs escaped her chest, gasping for air her words came out in a rush.

"It was never meant to be, I love someone else. I'm so sorry, but I fell in love. " she cried, her eyes turning from emerald green to puffy red.  She tried to touch him again but he recoiled, repulsed, a sense of betrayal setting in.  The look in his eyes did not go unnoticed.

"We were best friends " she whispered looking away for a moment, "I'm sorry we ruined that" she had said firmly wiping her tears with the sleeves of her sweater.

A man walks up behind her, clearing his throat loudly, and he knew this was her new love. He could see it, the way her face softened when she looked behind her.

And a certain anger rose in him. She was not allowed to be upset, she was the one who made her choice. So why was she crying?! She had no right. But just as soon as the anger rose it faded.

And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

He sighed, his eyes welling with tears, but he refused to let them slip.

"I-I" she fought to control her voice, " I have to go. I'm so very sorry" she reached out to touch his cheek again, but he stepped just out of reach.  She nodded, her hand recoiling back to her side.

"Goodbye" she whispered in a broken voice, and when he didn't say a word she flinched and turned her back to him, walking towards the other man, taking his hand and walking away.    He stared at their retreating figures for a while, willing her to turn around and come running back into his arms, but that didn't happen.   It never happens.

Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something...

"Goodbye" he whispered, wiping his eyes, turning and walking away.
