1. One

By the time I was your age, I’d give anything

To fall in love truly was all I could think

I sat in the waiting room of the hospital, flicking through the pages of some brainless gossip magazine. It was the fifth time this week, I came here so often that the medical stench that you could only find in hospitals became normal to me. I sighed as I put the magazine down, deciding to instead observe my surroundings.

It was unusually quiet for a Friday, there would normally be nurses bustling about, babies crying, the constant noise of people talking, patients being brought in and out. In its place was a vacant waiting room, consisting only of me, a man on the other side of the room who would not stop coughing, and the mean lady at the counter who would not give me a lollipop from the jar on her desk no matter how many times I asked nicely.

She always gave me this glare while saying, “It’s for kids only.”

I think that’s just plain discrimination. Who’s to say that lollipops were only made to be enjoyed by children? I think lollipops and all other types of candy were made for people of all ages, and don’t most adults still consider teenagers like me, ‘kids’?

I decided to get up and walk, my doctor has the tendency to make me wait forever until I can finally see him. I pushed through the double doors into a stark white hallway. If the doctor wants to see me, he can come find me.

I had only walked about ten steps into the hallway when suddenly, I was barrelled over by a girl in a hospital gown. I grunted as I looked at the person above me. She scrambled off of me and helped me up. The girl turned to me with a grin on her face as I stood with a slightly annoyed look, waiting for her to apologise.

“I am very sorry sir, but you’re going to have to come with me unless you want to be captured by the men in white coats,” she said breathlessly whilst still grinning, as she grabbed my wrist and pulled with enough force to get me to start running.

“Wait… what?” I replied dumbfounded, but my response fell on deaf ears.

“Miss, please come back!” I heard a voice shout behind us.

As we sprinted throughout the winding corridors of the hospital, I slowly noticed how her hair flew gracefully over her back as she ran with surprising energy, I noticed how beautiful her smile was as she seemed to be having the time of her life. But that couldn’t be the reason why my heart was beating so fast? I only just met her.

It was only beating this fast because I was running… right?

That's when I met your mother, the girl of my dreams

The most beautiful woman that I'd ever seen
